The new Vikings Stadium with its soaring glass roof and retractable glass wall panels will be one of the most visually awesome NFL stadiums ever constructed when it’s finally finished and ready to be occupied in 2016.

More from Minnesota Vikings

But don’t tell that to the Audubon Society. They look at the ice-sculpture-like stadium and all they see is a bunch of fatal bird collisions waiting to happen. The society warned of the potential hazard to birds represented by the new stadium in a sternly-worded statement:

"We’re talking about a billion dollar stadium here, and the cost to save perhaps thousands of migratory birds – and make the Vikings a global leader in green stadium design – is about one-tenth of one percent of that. Hundreds of millions of dollars of public money is going to build this stadium, and we know the people of Minnesota do not want their money killing birds. The Vikings recently approved spending millions and millions of additional dollars to make sure the stadium is “iconic” – surely they also want to make sure it’s not a death trap. We’re asking them to change their minds and do the right thing."

Look at the drawings of the new stadium and you kind of see the Audubon Society’s point. The stadium is basically a giant window. Birds love smacking into windows, especially at night when you are just trying to mind your own business and watch TV.

Think of the carnage as thousands of birds smack into that huge window, one after another, like something from a Hitchcockian horror movie. Thud thud thud and every one another dead bird. Awful. Then again, they are only birds. So yeah, screw them. Football baby.
