It was looking like Rashard Lewis had finally found a home with a team who loves its veteran players more than anything in the world.

More from Dallas Mavericks

But while the Dallas Mavericks wanted Lewis to help out their bench depth, they won’t be getting him as a failed physical due to a bum knee that needs surgery has voided the contract that the Mavs and Lewis agreed to earlier in the week.

According to Basketball Insiders Eric Pincus, the Mavs flagged Lewis’ physical due to his knee which means the free agent forward is remaining a free agent and won’t be joining the roster in Dallas.

This is a real bummer for both the Mavericks and for Lewis as the two seemed to be a great fit but now Lewis will be out of work until he can get his knee back to where it needs to be. Surgery is expected to clean things up in his bad knee, but in the meantime no one will be signing him unless they believe he’ll be back and worthy of a contract this season.

He’s a sharpshooter, but there’s no need to stash someone like Rashard Lewis when he’ll still be there for the picking a few months down the line.
