Frank Gore is the old man amidst a group of the most promising, young running backs in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers took LaMichael James in 2012, Marcus Lattimore in 2013 and Carlos Hyde in 2014. They’ve got incumbent standouts Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon. Frank Gore could easily let the young legs feed the wolves. But at 31, he still wants as many carries as he can get.

More from NFL

“When my number’s called to be out there, I’m out there,” he said Wednesday upon reporting to camp, via CSN Bay Area.

He understands that touches at running back in the NFL are near impossible to come by, no matter the backfield. The ten-year veteran is still charging.

“I’m from Miami,” he said. “I’ve been competing ever since I left high school. I’ve been with top guys who’ve been in the league. I’m up for it. One day, they’re going to get this role. But I’m here, and I’m going to make it a challenge.”

Gore also went to the University of Miami, where he suffered an ACL injury, only to return and rush for 100 yards in his first five games of the following season. He has exhibited toughness going all the way back to his sophomore and junior years of college. He wants the workload.

“I’m still here, so why not?” he said.

If people are waiting for the decline of Frank Gore — or the rise of the 49ers youngsters — they may have to wait a little bit longer. The veteran has plans for yet another prolific season.
