When the San Francisco 49ers drafted Marcus Lattimore last spring and then Carlos Hyde this year, the thought was that the Niners stock piling running backs wasn’t a plan that would work out all that well.

More from NFL

The one good thing everyone universally agreed upon was that it at least provided depth in case of an injury, and that’s exactly the case on Saturday morning as the Niners worst fears about Kendall Hunter were realized after an MRI revealed a torn ACL.

Now that running back depth of Frank Gore, Marcus Lattimore, LaMicheal James and Carlos Hyde will come in very handy for a Niners team already down a backup runner.

The loss of Hunter not only hurts fantasy football owners who were hoping to find a sneaky sleeper, but it puts the pressure on the 49ers to show that their depth at running back is for real and not just something they collected as a hobby.

Fantasy owners can rest assured though that another sleeper is waiting in the wings as rookie Carlos Hyde just saw his stock go through the roof now that Hunter’s absence makes him even more valuable than he was coming into camp.
