The Boston Red Sox don’t want to trade Jon Lester as they’d like to work out an extension with him, but that’s been something that has been hard to come by in recent weeks.

More from Boston Red Sox

An extension just isn’t happening but that doesn’t mean that Lester wants out of Boston. Unlike other players who get into contract disputes, Lester is committing to the Sox even without a contract and even if he ends up getting traded before the deadline passes later this month.

Lester spoke to WEEI.com’s Alex Speier who passed along Lester’s words about wanting to return to the Boston Red Sox no matter where he ends up when the trade deadline arrives this summer.

"“[M]y ultimate goal would be to come back here. That would be, like I said the other day, I know that’s hard to do,” Lester says. “Money doesn’t buy you happiness."

This is a bit of confusion information for Sox fans as it seems to indicate mutual interest from both sides which makes it hard to figure out why an extension can’t be worked out now. What it also does is kills Lester’s trade value, as he’s basically saying a contender can acquire him but can’t expect to have him for very long.

That might not stop a trade, but it just seems to further complicate a situation that has one resolution even if it takes a while to get there.
