Two weeks ago a team like the Dodgers or Mariners or Giants may have been able to get David Price for a relative bargain price, but since that time the Tampa Bay Rays have gone on a tear, and now the cost of Price is skyrocketing.

More from MLB

With the Rays getting back into contention, they can afford to hold out for a massive deal. How massive? One executive told Jon Heyman the Rays will get a 200% markup on Price or not trade him.

A 200% markup? That’s getting into Barnes and Noble territory right there.

You can’t see the Dodgers overpaying that mightily for Price when a pitcher like Cole Hamels or Jon Lester might be gotten for less. Teams like the Red Sox and Phillies are in much worse situations than Tampa Bay right now and won’t ask quite such a king’s ransom in exchange for their pitching commodities.

And anyway, it would just be spiritually crushing if the Rays traded David Price now. After how hard that team has fought to get back in it, there would arguably be something flat-out morally wrong about undercutting them by dealing Price.

You could argue that dealing Price is still the right thing to do for the long-term, but sometimes you have to say screw the sensible and do what makes your soul happy. The Rays’ players deserve a chance to get all the way back in this. They need to keep David Price.
