With running back Knowshon Moreno out of the equation, the Denver Broncos are likely going to use second-year player Montee Ball as the featured back. Backing him up will likely be Ronnie Hillman, who “has usually been the second running back up” during training camp so far.

During a Q&A session on the Broncos’ website, Andrew Mason was asked: “Aside from Montee Ball and CJ Anderson, which RB’s do you see making the final 53-man roster?”

“You didn’t mention Ronnie Hillman, who has usually been the second running back up behind Ball and has been effective so far in training camp,” Mason responded. “As I noted in recent editions of the daily Five Thoughts from practice, he’s hitting the holes well. He’s quicker and more decisive when there’s a hole in front of him.”

He also made it sound like Hillman was a lock to make the roster saying “The competition is elsewhere” in reference to making the final 53-many roster. That means Hillman is likely ahead of Anderson, whom the fan asked about, in the race for that second roster-spot.

The problem for Hillman was his tendency to turn the ball over with four fumbles in 140 carries. If he can show improvement in that area in camp and during the preseason, he could lock up that spot.
