One team we haven’t heard connected with Jon Lester is the Oakland A’s. Probably because after acquiring Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, no one thinks the A’s have enough left to make that deal happen.

More from Boston Red Sox

Well there’s one guy out there who thinks Billy Beane can scour his system and find enough prospects to get Jon Lester. And that one guy is Jim Bowden.

The ever-unpredictable Bowden tweeted:

As with everything that comes out of Bowden’s mouth, fingers or any other part of his body, it’s perfectly natural to greet this report with more than a little skepticism.

Then again, this is Billy Beane we’re talking about. The maestro. The wizard. The Grand Master of Deal-Swinging.

The A’s signaled that they are all-in by making the trade for Samardzija and Hammel. So if you’re all-in, you’re all-in. If you’re willing to go that far, there’s no reason to believe you wouldn’t be willing to go for Jon Lester if at all possible.

What can the A’s trade for Lester? Tommy Milone, for one. He was having a nice year before the trade with the Cubs forced him to be sent down to triple-A.

Milone could be the center piece of a deal for Lester. Or, this could be Jim Bowden talking out of his butt. If Billy Beane has proven anything, it’s that we should never put anything past him.
