Some sports video game franchises are simply ahead of their time. Front Page Sports Football definitely belongs in that category for the way it allowed PC gamers in the 1990s to simulate what it would be like to own and run their own professional football franchises.

Pretty soon, a new generation of sports sim fanatics will get to experience Front Page Sports Football, updated for this century. Cyanide, the French studio that had reportedly been working on reviving the franchise as far back as 2009, announced today that a new version of the game is on the way — soon enough that we could be playing it by the time the upcoming NFL season kicks off. The game will be self-published and available only on PC.

Here’s a short summary of what Cyanide has planned:

"With Front Page Sports Football, players will be able to manage a US football team of their creation and make all the decisions that a real manager or coach would make during a season. Just like every other general manager, players will compose the best team (from the draft, signing free agents and the like, as well as manage many other details like morale, affinity, finances, training sessions, etc."

Just like the original games, players will also guide their teams from an Xs and Os standpoint, with the ability to choose game plans from a playbook of over 2,300 offensive plays and defensive schemes. Full 2D and 3D game replays are available for a gaming version of film study, and a wide range of statistics will give gamers plenty of numbers to crunch in order to maximize their chances for success.

The Front Page Sports Football Facebook page is up and running, and should be full of news any day since real pro football is bearing down on us fast. And as my younger self would certainly say, welcome back FPS Football!
