Grizzlies owner says re-signing Marc Gasol is teams top priority
Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge aren’t the only big men who will draw major attention in the summer of 2015. Memphis Grizzlies star Marc Gasol will be alongside them as his contract runs out after the upcoming season. And with that being a thing, Griz owner Robert Pera made it known today that the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year is the teams top priority going forward.

Since being traded to the team in the Pau Gasol blockbuster trade in 2008, Marc Gasol has been pivotal to the success of the Memphis Grizzlies. Alongside Zach Randolph, he and Z-Bo have made their claim around the league as the best power forward-center tandem in the NBA, relying on their hi-low play to take advantage of opponents.
With Zach Randolph signed through the next three seasons, it’s clear the Memphis Grizzlies want to continue with this combo as they hope to extend their championship window. By re-signing Marc Gasol, the team allows them to do so as well as prolong the relevance of the franchise as he and Mike Conley–who’s a free agent in 2016–become the teams one-two punch of the future.
It has been reported that the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks–and others–will pursue Gasol if he hits the free agent market.
Last season, despite missing 20-plus games, Gasol averaged 14.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
