The New York Yankees continued their trend of making modest moves at the 2014 Trade Deadline when they dealt for infielder Stephen Drew and infielder/outfielder Martin Prado.

As we all wait to see if that will be enough to propel the Yankees to a playoff run in Derek Jeter‘s final season, we learn that the Yankees tried to go bolder than that at the deadline. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Brian Cashman and company attempted deals for Boston Red Sox starting pitchers Jon Lester and John Lackey.

Those efforts were thwarted, however, because Boston’s ownership said no to sending such major players to the rival Yankees.

"According to a major league source, the Yankees tried to engage the Red Sox on Jon Lester/John Lackey but were told Sox ownership wouldn’t allow it. The Yankees were able to take on Stephen Drew, however, since he was not perceived as major player."

Hey man, what did Stephen Drew ever do to you? Why do we have to drag him into this?

What continues to loom as an interesting possibility is that Lester might sign with the Yankees as a free agent this winter. There will surely be a fit in terms of money and in terms of a need on the Yankees’ end. It would mostly come down to how motivated Lester would be to make such a situation come to be or if he saw a better fit with the Red Sox or somewhere else.

Whatever happens this off-season, the Red Sox weren’t going to help the Yankees get him or Lackey, and understandably so.
