Beleaguered Cubs fans can hear the bugler. They know the cavalry is coming.

More from Chicago Cubs

Yes long-suffering Cubs fanatics, it’s happening. The Cubs reportedly will call up top prospect Javier Baez, who is expected to join the team in Colorado.

After hitting multiple bombs in spring training and raising the hopes of Cubs fans to levels not seen since Lou Piniella first donned the team’s uniform, Baez was naturally sent down to the minors for a little more seasoning.

All he’s done in the minors this year is hit .260 with 23 HR, 80 RBI and 16 SB. He and fellow Cubs prospect Kris Bryant have put on a power show in triple-A this year, causing beautiful dreams of future glory to dance through the otherwise-troubled minds of Cubs fans everywhere.

Before that future can come to pass, these guys need to get some major league ABs. The Cubs really have no reason not to give Baez and Bryant a look with the big club, and Baez will be the first of the two. Arismendy Alcantara has already gotten the call from the Cubs and at times looked like the future star everyone expects him to be.

With Baez, Alcantara and Anthony Rizzo lighting up ball parks, Cubs fans will have plenty of reason to tune in for the rest of the season. Unlike past years when fans have totally checked out in the second half, with the team totally out of contention.

Young players bring excitement. That’s how it’s supposed to work.
