The offseason is generally when athletes make ridiculous statements about how well their team is going to do the following season.

More from NBA

A good example of this is Denver Nuggets shooting guard Aaron Afflalo, who said in July that he believes the Nuggets are a “championship team.” That seemingly ignores the fact that the squad won just 36 games last season.

So, we have to give props to Carmelo Anthony for being self aware enough to admit that his New York Knicks aren’t going to win a title in 2014-15.

From Primera Hora:

"“I do not expect to win a championship this year. That’s something that takes time and everything has to be in sync, from management to players. We have much work to do, but something that drives me. I know we can start creating the foundation of what we do. It’s the start of a good process, “said Puerto Rican player. “Next year we will have enough money to spend within the salary cap. But this year it is important to take the necessary steps towards those who will in the next year. I want to concentrate on building what we want from this year. “"

Melo is exactly right here. The Knicks will have to wait until next offseason until they can try and build up this team to what it needs to be. That doesn’t mean Carmelo doesn’t believe in his teammates or that he’s not going to give maximum effort next season, only that he is a realist.

Anthony averaged 27.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this past season.
