The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to acquire Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves but it’s looking like that deal might be put on serious hold for the time being.

More from Cleveland Cavaliers

The reason that the deal needs to be put on hold is because it can’t legally happen or be talked about by the two teams when it comes to making agreements to make trades later in the month. As reported yesterday, the Wolves and Cavaliers have agreed in principal to swap Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a draft pick for Kevin Love.

According to Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein of ESPN, the NBA could end up being the ones who ultimately play decision makers in the Love trade situation and that decision could be to nix the trade and block it for violating league rules.

"In addition, under NBA rules, such an agreement would be illegal, and, if proven, it potentially could be grounds for the league to block this trade and dole out punishment to both teams."

While it’s resolution for those following the matter, it’s also against league rules to agree to a trade that involves players who can’t be traded yet, which may become a problem later in the month for the status of the trade. It’s not likely that a trade would be blocked by the league but it’s not something the league or  Adam Silver would shy away from.

As likeable as he is, Silver has put his name behind being a disciplinarian and to let this type of behind the scenes dealing happen when it can’t happen seems like something could blow the trade up like we’ve seen so many trades blown up in the past.
