Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is tired of people ripping his coaches
By Dan Zinski
The St. Louis Cardinals are looking like anything but an offensive juggernaut this year, which has led some to heap criticism upon the Cardinals’ coaching staff, in particular hitting coach John Mabry. And this doesn’t set very well with manager Mike Matheny.

Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
"“You have two factors,” Matheny said before the Cardinals’ series finale at Marlins Park. “You take it personal if it doesn’t get done, even though you’re going about it right. You’re putting as much work if not more now than what you did last year when things were going so well. You’ve got people taking cheap shots all the time. You’re human. You wear that. Plus you know that the [players] are not happy with where the guys are right now. If you have coaches who don’t care, then they’re just putting in their time and chalking it up to a number of issues.“That’s not what we have.”"
Matheny can rant all he wants and insist that his coaches are putting in the work, but the fact remains that his team is not hitting. Tuesday night they were shut out for the 11th time this season and that kind of stuff is going to get noticed and coaches are going to get ripped.
It’s cool that Matheny is willing to go to bat for his coaches but at the same time I can’t help but smell a little desperation in the manager’s remarks. Matheny is beginning to sound like a guy who is feeling a little heat from the front office.
Those guys better start swinging the sticks in St. Louis or there could be more than a new hitting coach up there in Busch Stadium.
