It was a happy day Saturday for Detroit fans who came into the ballpark not knowing what to expect from the star-studded Tigers that had lost eight of their last 12 games. Dominant starting pitchers David Price and Felix Hernandez took the mounds and Detroit and Price came out on top with a 4-2 victory.

More from Detroit Tigers

The Seattle Mariners five game win streak was snapped when David Price out dueled Felix Hernandez with a one-run, eight inning performance where he allowed just three hits and recorded seven strikeouts. Price was dominant and extended his MLB-high games started with eight innings pitched or more to 14. The second highest is Johnny Cueto with 11.

In Price’s first game in Detroit and his third since he was traded from Tampa Bay, he found himself in an eighth inning jam, but pushed his way out of it as he struck out Austin Jackson, former Tiger than was was included in the Price trade, and forced a groundout to Dustin Ackley.

Felix Hernandez was pulled from the game in the fifth inning after 92 pitches after he was hit by a ball in the third off of Ian Kinsler’s bat and in the fifth by Miguel Cabrera. Hernandez had allowed two runs and seven hits through five innings and ended his streak of consecutive seven innings pitched or more with two runs or fewer at 16. This was the highest the streak has ever been in the MLB, ahead of Tom Seaver at 13 back in 1971.

With the win, the Detroit Tigers move back into the second place wild card spot just a half game against the Mariners. The race for the playoffs continues to go back and forth and Sunday’s game between the Tigers and Mariners could mean more than we think.
