The Tennessee Titans would clearly love for rookie running back Bishop Sankey to become their primary ball carrier, but that plan won’t come to fruition unless or until the young man learns how to hold onto the ball.

More from NFL

Sankey turned the ball over when fumbling the exchange from fellow rookie Zach Mettenberger late in Tennessee’s preseason game against the Saints, and after the game coach Ken Whisenhunt commented on the need for Sankey to shore up his ball security (via tennessean.com):

"“I’m impressed with a lot of the things about Bishop, but he’s a rookie, and a lot of things that are causing these problems are things that he needs time with and he’s got to get better at — whether it’s footwork, whether it’s how he’s taking the balls on handoffs, understanding the protections,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said, noting that Sankey missed the first nine OTAs because of school commitments.“He missed a lot of time. He’s a smart young man, but some of those things, you need to work with. He’s got to continue to get those things, because there’s no question he’s a talented player.”"

Sankey has gotten the bulk of the carries in preseason for Tennessee, which tells you all you need to know about the team’s plans for the second-round pick. They want him to be their bellcow (or whatever term you’re supposed to use now).

But plans can be changed if players lose the trust of coaches, and the fastest way to lose trust if you’re a rookie is by turning the ball over the way Sankey did against the Saints.
