For those of you who may have been living under a rock for the past few weeks, here is how to is supposed to go.

Once a person has completed the challenge, they get to nominate other people to follow suit. In response, you have 24 hours to either participate in the challenge yourself and/or make a donation to a charity aiding ALS Research.

While you are not required to donate if you take the challenge yourself, there has been an influx of people have been stepping up and doing both.

At this point, most of you will have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron star Robert Downey Jr. step up and complete the challenge. While he did call out some of his superhero cast mates to follow suit, it turns out that it was a villain who was first to take up the challenge.

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston has stepped up – after being nominated by Firefly and Serenity star Nathan Fillion – to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

We would be completely remiss in our duties if we didn’t pass on the chilly goodness to you. So…have a look at Tom Hiddleston as he completes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Once Hiddleston was successfully freezing cold, he nominated two more people to step up and accept the challenge. Next up should be The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Luke Evans. The clock is ticking, gentlemen.

For those of you who do now know what ALS truly is, it is a debilitating disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The actual name for the disease is Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is “a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.”

The motor neurons in the body eventually begin to die off which leads to a complete loss of muscle control and eventually death. It is a horrible disease and not something that you would ever want to watch a friend or family member go through.

That is why this challenge is so important, because it brings awareness to a sometimes forgotten disease and has helped incredibly in raising money to continue researching a cure for the crippling disease.
