The Chicago Bears took a chance on signing Santonio Holmes to see if he’ll fit in with their roster, but it’s becoming clear taht the risk factor involved for the bears is extremely low.

More from Chicago Bears

Holmes is coming off a poor stint with the New York Jets and the Bears are hoping he can become their No. 3 wide receiver by channeling his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers but even if that doesn’t happen, the Bears stand to lose almost nothing if Holmes doesn’t work out.

According to ESPN.com’s Field Yates, the Bears gave Holmes a minimum veteran contract of less than $1 million, which means the incentive is on Holmes to perform and not on the Bears to pay him much of anything.

The Bears want to have Holmes return to glory and form a three headed receiver monster with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, but he has a lot of work to do before that happens. He has talent — more than $1 million worth — but Holmes needs to tap into that and tap in deep to make sure this stint with the Bears isn’t his last in the NFL.
