The community of Ferguson, Missouri has been fighting through more than a week of unrest following the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. A lot of athletes have been quiet about the tragedy, but the Washington Redskins took an opportunity to pay tribute on Monday Night Football before their game against the Cleveland Browns.

When the Redskins defensive backs walked out onto the field, they paid tribute to Brown by holding their hands up.

The gesture was referencing eye witness reports that Brown was surrendering to police before he was shot six times in the middle of the street.

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather spoke to USA Today about the team’s decision to pay tribute to Brown.

“We just wanted everybody to know that we support Michael and acknowledge what happened in Ferguson,” Meriweather said. “Crazy things happen every day in this world.

“It was all of ours idea, something we decided to do as a group just to show our support.”

It is great to see that a group of athletes is coming together to show their support to a community that needs every bit of positive support at a time like this.

The St. Louis Rams are another team that is attempting to help the Ferguson community heal, by giving out free tickets to this weekend’s game to high school football players from three Ferguson area high schools.
