Amongst the NFL’s biggest surprises last year was Miami Dolphins’ tight end Charles Clay. The former sixth round pick was thrust into the spotlight and starting tight end role for the Dolphins when offseason acquisition Dustin Keller went down with a brutal ACL injury in the preseason.

More from Miami Dolphins

In Clay’s previous two season with the Dolphins, he racked up a total of 34 receptions and five touchdowns. When given a chance to shine last year, Clay broke out with a sensational season hauling in 69 receptions and 6 touchdowns.

Every media outlet and pundit was stunned by Clay’s sudden emergence as the Dolphins “do it all” player. Clay blocked well, caught the ball, broke tackles, and even spent time as a fullback blocking for Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas.

Going into this season many believe Clay could be amongst the league’s best tight ends, but injuries have hobbled him this offseason. Clay has already missed both preseason games, but now it seems that he will debut in the team’s third game against the Dallas Cowboys this weekend.

With Clay on the field, the Dolphins can finally work their offense at about 100%. Starting center Mike Pouncey will still be unavailable to suit up, but most of the Dolphins starters will get playing time this weekend.

If Clay can stay healthy throughout the season, he could prove to be a huge factor for the Dolphins once again.
