Texas Rangers reliever Neal Cotts has been claimed off revocable waivers. The team was unable to trade him and will retain the lefty for the rest of the season. Once the season ends, he is free to walk as a free agent.

Reportedly, Cotts had been claimed by another interested team but after a trade could not be worked out, and the Rangers pulled him back. In doing so, they have prevented the possibility of any future trades for Cotts. The Rangers want Cotts to return next season, though it was expected that they would trade him anyways and hope that he would return anyway. Cotts has been an essential element to the Rangers and a bright spot for the roster.

He now has the opportunity walk away from the MLB’s worst team at the end of the season. The Rangers would be left without any assets in return.

Cotts isn’t the only Rangers start to be sent through wavers, Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas writes:

"The Rangers have sent Yu Darvish, Adrian Beltre, Shin-Soo Choo, Elvis Andrus and Alex Rios through waivers in the last few weeks. But the team has no intention of trading some of its high-priced talent such as Darvish because of the value he has to the franchise."

The Rangers have expressed interested in the return of Rios, whose contract includes a $13.5 million option.

34-year-old setup man, Cotts has a 3.48 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 54 innings this season.
