When the final whistle blew, it was Leones Negros who stunned a lot of people by knocking off the defending champs with a late goal for the 1-0 win.

Leones Negros sat at the bottom of the league table with just one point entering today’s game, and was likely be relegated back to Ascenso MX in no time without a turnaround.

For Leon, a slow start to the Apertura led to them sitting outside of the top 8 with just six points, but they had been coming on strong as of late and could find themselves right back in the mix with a dominating win on Sunday night.

We sat through a relatively quiet first half that sent us into the break with a scoreless draw. The biggest moment of the half came when Leon defender Edwin Hernandez received a red card in the 21st minute.

Hernandez’s mishap put Leon at a disadvantage as they would be forced to play the remainder of the game with a man down.

The fans at Estadio Jalisco were hoping things would turn around in the second half thanks to the man advantage.

Surprisingly, they did, and the result was in Leones Negros’ favor.

In the  70th minute, Leones Negros pulled off a bit of a shocker when they took a 1-0 lead over Club Leon.

The ball came sailing into the box when William Ferreira headed a pass to Fidel Martínez, who beat Leon’s William Yarbrough to the bottom right corner of the net to put Universidad de Guadalajara ahead.

Leones Negros would need to buckle down and play some solid defense if they did not want to blow their lead, and they were able to do just that as they went on to secure their first win of the Liga MX Apertura and advance their point total to four.
