Dimitri Patterson has emerged from wherever he has been hiding out since last Friday when he failed to show for the Jets’ preseason game against the Giants, if you want to call texting a reporter “emerging.”

More from New York Jets

ESPN’s Josina Anderson received a dispatch from the AWOL Patterson, who obviously has been reading the reports about his disappearance:

The situation with Patterson unfolded in bizarre fashion, beginning with his failure to show for the Jets’ preseason game Friday.

On Sunday, Jets GM John Idzik called Patterson’s absence “unexcused.” The Jets made contact with Patterson’s agent Drew Rosenhaus who reported that Patterson was physically fine.

Later on Sunday, Idzik and Jets coach Rex Ryan reportedly met with Patterson. Details of the meeting were not revealed.

Patterson’s communique via Josina Anderson will do little to clear up the sense of weird mystery surrounding his unannounced, unexcused bail out on the Jets.

He can call the situation comical if he wants but I’m guessing Rex Ryan isn’t laughing. And BTW Dimitri Patterson, if you disappear without telling anyone, you are by definition AWOL.

We’ll see how this situation resolves itself in the coming days. I’ve got to believe Patterson will be in line for some kind of discipline from the Jets. Guys can’t just bail on preseason games without being punished, otherwise no one would ever show up to play in preseason games.
