The NFL regular season is just a week away as this upcoming Sunday will be the last Sunday we have without football. But while that’s a footnote this week for fans, it’s a make-or-break situation for the players on roster bubbles throughout the league.

More from NFL

One of those players is Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Landry Jones, who is the third-string quarterback on the roster and is likely to be cut if he doesn’t absolutely wow coaches on Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers. According to Steve Reed of The Associated Press, it appears that Jones will be playing for his job on Thursday night when the Steelers and Panthers wrap up their preseasons against one another.

"Whether the Pittsburgh Steelers’ third-string quarterback gets to stick around beyond the weekend could depend on how he fares in Thursday night’s preseason finale against Webb and the Carolina Panthers.“I need to see consistent above-the-line play in all areas,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said when asked about the former Oklahoma star’s status."

Two of the three quarterbacks that the Steelers have on roster are safe, as Ben Roethlisberger isn’t going anywhere and Bruce Gradkowski is penciled in as his backup. But Jones needs to convince the Steelers that carrying three quarterbacks into the season is a good idea, and he’s going to need the game of his life to do so on Thursday.
