Robert Quinn discusses contract extension with the St. Louis Rams

The 2011 draft class is getting paid lately. Patrick Peterson, Andy Dalton, Richard Sherman, Tryon Smith, and now JJ Watt have all been granted contract extensions by their team this offseason. In fact, Watt’s extension today made him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.

That leaves St. Louis Rams Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Quinn, who was selected with the 14th overall pick in 2011, on the outside looking in. Quinn, who was selected only three picks after Watt, has been sensational in his short NFL career. In three years Quinn has racked up 34.5 sacks as well as 109 combined tackles.

To compare with JJ Watt, who is considered by many as the league’s best defensive end, he had 36.5 sacks in the same time span as Quinn. When news broke today that Watt received his well deserved contract extension, Quinn took to Twitter to congratulate him:

Obviously it is time for the Rams to pay Quinn as well, but Quinn will not let that be a distraction as the season kicks off this weekend. Speaking with Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Quinn explained his thoughts on a contract extension.

“Those guys are well deserving”, Quinn told Breer recently. “You could say Patrick Peterson, three-time Pro Bowler in three years, so he’s definitely well deserving, and Tyron too. I don’t want to let that be a distraction because then I’ll start being selfish and focusing on myself and I don’t want to bring the team down. So I kinda just stay in my lane and when the opportunity approaches, I’ll take advantage of it.”

If Quinn continues to produce, it likely won’t be long before he is paid handsomely just like Watt.
