The Boston Celtics wanted to make a big move in the offseason but instead wound up continuing to stock pile young talent and assets, selecting former Oklahoma State Cowboys’ point guard Marcus Smart and former Kentucky Wildcats’ swingman James Young. However, that doesn’t mean the Celtics aren’t still trying to make a big move.

More from Boston Celtics

Nate Duncan of Basketball Insiders, the Celtics have plenty of assets to make a move.

"I think Ainge’s plan is pretty obvious. It’s not like the C’s were going anywhere with Pierce and Garnett last year, especially with Rondo recovering from a torn ACL. Getting a ton of draft assets from the Nets was a coup. Imagine where the C’s would be now had they kept those guys. The Celtics are quite confident in their scouting (as I’m sure nearly all teams are), but you are right that finding stars through the draft is easier said than done. Fortunately the Celtics have a lot of bullets to fire to increase their odds."

Of course rather than using their assets to acquire a star, the Celtics may opt to deal Rondo and get even younger, continuing to build for the future.

Last season, Rondo averaged 11.7 points, 9.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 40.3% from the field, 28.9% from beyond the arc and 62.7% from the free throw line. Rondo was originally selected by the Celtics with the 21st-overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. In his eight-year career, he has averaged 11.1 points, 8.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.5% from the floor, 25.2% from three and 62.1% from the free throw line.
