Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger whiffs on attempted block (Video)

Most NFL quarterbacks have a pretty good excuse to offer half-hearted attempted when asked to throw a block against a defender. Big Ben Roethlisberger might be an exception, however.

If ever there was a quarterback with the build and style of play to go throw a big block, it would be Roethlisberger. That’s not to say that the Steelers would be especially excited about the idea of their franchise quarterback seeking out extra and arguably unnecessary contact, but he could probably take it.
On Thursday night, Roethlisberger saw his running back Le’Veon Bell spin his way to a big gain on the ground. Because of the way Bell changed directions and effectively reversed field, Big Ben found himself in a position to throw a block to help his guy get free.
Instead of actually putting a hit on the defender, Roethlisberger instead went with the move usually seen from guys like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady: he just kind of fell down next to the guy.
To be fair, this play was effective, as Roethlisberger at least got in the way enough to allow Bell to run by. It just happens to also be quite entertaining because he completely whiffed on the actual block itself.
