The calls for the resignation or firing of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell are loud and they are many.

More from NFL

In the wake of his unacceptable mishandling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse situation, whether because of a web of lies or incompetence, there is growing momentum that Goodell must go, and that he must go now.

Much of the responsibility to actually oust Goodell would fall on the NFL’s 32 owners, as the commissioner technically works for them. In that regard, it is unclear how motivated they would be to get up in arms and or actually move to fire Goodell.

One owner issued his support for Goodell on Saturday. Washington Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder provided the following public statement (via the team’s Twitter account):

Because the business of the NFL is thriving right now, it is not surprising that Goodell would receive support from the owners. As noted by Mike Garafolo:

Even bearing that in mind, it is unfathomable to think that Snyder would actually issue a public statement in which he specifically lauds Goodell’s handling of the Rice investigation. Perhaps a more nuanced statement, something about “supporting the commissioner moving forward as the league works to address domestic violence”…perhaps something like that would be understandable.

To specifically say that the Rice situation was handled well, in the midst of a pile of information that says otherwise, is especially tone-deaf from Snyder, even by his standards.
