Although Team USA cruised to a gold medal in the FIBA World Cup and were rarely even challenged during the tournament, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of excitement surrounding their victory.

That has caused some to credit the merit of the World Cup and whether or not people care enough to continue sending marquee players to play in the tournament.

Don’t try telling that to Serbia.

Serbia pulled a surprise in the tournament, making it to the finals, defeating France, who defeated the heavy favorite to make it to the championship game, Spain, in the semi-finals. Serbia doesn’t feature many well-known players (although guard Bogdan Bogdanovic was drafted in the first round by the Phoenix Suns) so they weren’t expected to challenge some of the upper-echelon teams. They gave Team USA a test early but the Americans eventually pulled away to win 129-92.

Instead of being upset, the Serbian team was thrilled to win the silver medal and have gotten a hero’s welcome since returning to Serbia.

The Serbian fans are apparently chanting “American is cursed and so is shiny gold.”
