The NFL has a domestic abuse epidemic at the moment and it’s only just now starting to deal with it.

Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy and Ray Rice are not just average, small time football players getting into trouble — they’re Pro Bowl talents who are some of the biggest names in the sport. Rice has been cut for beating his wife Janay in an elevator this past year, Peterson is being paid to stay away from the team for the time being and the Panthers are now trying to determine what will happen with Hardy.

According to Jason Cole from Bleacher Report and formerly of Yahoo! Sports, the Panthers are expected to do with Greg Hardy what the Minnesota Vikings did with Adrian Peterson and plan on placing him on the Commissioner’s Exempt List.

“In the aftermath of the Vikings decision to put Adrian Peterson  on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, which is basically deactivate him and pay him until his legal issues are taken care of, the Carolina Panthers are going to do the same thing,” Cole reported this morning. “They are having a meeting this morning between Greg Hardy, his agent Drew Rosenhaus and team management to discuss exactly what they’re going to do.”

Cole reiterates though that the expectation is that Hardy will be placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List just like Adrian Peterson was until something else can be figured out about how to handle the defensive end.

The whole point of putting a player on the Commissioner’s Exempt List is to literally buy time to deal with a player while not running the risk of being sued for salary or playing time. Peterson and Hardy will not play but they’ll be paid which is really all they can ask for at this point.
