Dallas Cowboys vs. St. Louis Rams

The Dallas Cowboys travel to Missouri to take on the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome. It is the second game on the road for the Cowboys who were able to get their first win of the season last week over the St. Louis Rams with a solid outing from their modern trio of stars: Tony Romo, Dez Byrant and DeMarco Murray. The St. Louis Rams are also 1-1, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their last game, which was also on the road. They also did it without starter Sam Bradford.

It also has the subplot of the team that released Michael Sam hosting the team that signed him.

Keys to Victory

The Cowboys need to keep focusing on the run game. The ground attack with DeMarco Murray balanced the offense and the Rams currently have one of the league’s worst run defenses. Their 171 yards per game allowed on the ground is ranked 30th in the league. Their pass defense is considerably better. With the strong start to the season DeMarco Murray has had, they can just lean on him and chose to pass less frequently, a lot like the formula the Cowboys used back in the days of the triplets.

Believe it or not, statistically the Cowboys defense is fairly balanced. Their 13th in the league against the pass and 14th in the league against the run. For the Rams it is a pick your poison kind of situation and attacking where ever they feel confident on offense. As far as defense goes, the Rams need to try and stop the run and hope to create turnovers when the Cowboys turn to the pass game.

Prediction

Ultimately I think the Cowboys liked what they saw in the win last week. Not only did they run the ball effectively and control the game, the Cowboys ran off the last six minutes of the game with a drive of nothing but runs. One of the biggest criticisms against the Cowboys in previous seasons were going to the run too late in games, stopping the clock, and giving their opponents time to get back into it. It looks like the Cowboys are starting to figure things out.

Final Score: Cowboys 24 Rams 17
