The start of training camp for the Philadelphia Flyers did not go according to the plan as team captain and Hart Trophy finalist, Claude Giroux, was injured in the first 15 minutes of the first practice on Friday.

General manager Ron Hextall said Giroux will miss two weeks with a lower-body injury. “We don’t want to start camp like that but what are you going to do?” Hextall said, via NHL.com. “We’ll battle through and be the best we can be.”

The Flyers open the regular season on Oct. 8 against the Boston Bruins and hope to have Giroux back in time for the opener, but his status for the eight preseason games, the first being on Sept. 22, likely means he will miss the entire preseason slate.

Darroll Powe filled in at center on the top line with Giroux out and was flanked by left wing Brayden Schenn and right wing Jakub Voracek.

Hextall was asked if Schenn could shift to center with Giroux out and if the line combinations are subject to change.

“That’s up to the coach, but we’ll discuss it,” Hextall told CSNPhilly.com. “There’s going to be different line combinations probably tried throughout training camp and preseason, so we’ll see. We’ll see how that goes.”

Giroux scored 86 points in 82 games last season after he missed portions of training camp last season as he recovered from surgery to repair a tendon in his finger.
