The Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated the No. 8 LSU Tigers for the first time since 1999 and won in Tiger Stadium for the first time since Nov. 26, 1991 after Dak Prescott led the Bulldogs to a 34-29 historic upset for the SEC west program.

Prescott was masterful throughout the evening as he executed Dan Mullen’s game plan to perfection as he mixed in the pass with the run with ease and kept the LSU defense off balance all night as Mullen picks up his biggest win in his six-year tenure in Starkville.

The Louisiana native finished with 268 yards passing and two touchdowns on 15-of-24 passing and had his seventh career 100-yard rushing game with 105 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

LSU was coming off back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1985, but the jump in competition from Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe to Mississippi State caught the LSU defense off guard and they had no answer for the Bulldog offense.

The points allowed by LSU is the most points given up by LSU in a September game since the Auburn Tigers scored 34 in 2000 in what was Nick Saban’s third game and tonight’s loss was the first September loss for LSU since Auburn knocked them off in 2006.

Mississippi State was not intimidated by the loud crowd in Death Valley where Les Miles once said is the place where opponents dreams come to die. Tonight, it was the losing streak that died and Prescott took the crowd out of the game early with a six-play scoring drive capped off with a nine-yard pass to De’Runnya Wilson at the 10:47 mark in the first. Wilson finished with 91 yards and four receptions.

The Dawgs kept the pressure on the home team with a 98-yard touchdown drive over five plays that featured a 66-yard run from Josh Robinson and it was he who capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown drive that left Tiger Stadium in shock after the 98-yard drive. Robinson had a career-high 197 yards on 16 carries.

  • With LSU’s offense failing to get much going on the ground against the No. 11 rush defense of Mississippi State, the offense stalled out without LSU being able to rely on their stable of power running backs and were one-dimensional. That one dimension was not effective as Anthony Jennings was unable to make plays with his arm as he was wildly erratic on the night before giving way to Brandon Harris late in the fourth.

The teams traded field goals in the second quarter as Mississippi State took a 17-3 lead at halftime and the confidence that they could beat the team who has traditionally had their number.

All the momentum Mississippi State built in the first half could have come crashing down after Danielle hunter recovered a fumble on the first play of the third quarter and returned it for a 25-yard touchdown to shrink the lead to 17-10.

However, that was when Prescott overcame the fumble and showed he was the best player on the field tonight as he broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run on the ensuing possession.

One drive later, Prescott eluded the rush from LSU, shook off a would-be tackler and scrambled to find Jameon Lewis for a 74-yard touchdown to make it a 34-10 game entering the fourth quarter and sent the LSU fans to the exits with Mississippi State fans chanting “maroon” “white” as the game was theirs after a series of body blows resulted in the big bad bully getting knocked out.

LSU made things interesting in the final two minutes after Harris connected with fellow true freshman Malachi Dupre for two touchdowns, including one after an awful snap from Mississippi State sailed over the head of Prescott and was recovered by LSU.

But it was too little and too late for the Bayou Bengals as they got a wake-up call from the team who was tired of being on the wrong end of a rivalry and perhaps is posed to breakthrough in the nation’s toughest division in college football’s toughest conference.
