Time is running out for the Detroit Red Wings to sign head coach Mike Babcock to a contract extension before the regular season begins on Oct. 9 when they host the Boston Bruins, the same team who knocked them out of the playoffs last season.

Babcock will be a free agent at the end of the season and would be the hottest commodity on the market, players included, as he is arguably the best coach in the NHL, but has maintained his stance that he will not discuss his contract situation during the season.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland is scheduled to meet with Babcock this week or early next week, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger to present an offer to the coach who is about to enter his 10th season with Detroit.

A separation would appear unlikely considering Babcock wants to remain in Hockeytown and Holland wants to keep Babcock behind the bench, so it would be shocking if the two parties can not come to an agreement on a multi-year extension to keep him in Detroit for the foreseeable future.

Babocock owns a 415-198-91 record in his first nine years with the Red Wings and is 64-51 in the postseason, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2008.
