According to Jim Boeheim, Carmelo Anthony was…not smart in the classroom

Carmelo Anthony was outstanding in his lone basketball season at Syracuse, leading the Orange to a national title in 2003.

However, Anthony was far from great in the classroom in college, as revealed by former coach Jim Boeheim in his new book “Bleeding Orange.”

From the New York Daily News:

"In “Bleeding Orange,” the Knicks star’s former coach at Syracuse reveals Anthony’s grades for the first semester of his lone year (2002-03) at the upstate university. He made four C’s and one D that fall before leading the Orange to the NCAA championship in the spring and bolting straight to the NBA.“Maybe if we hadn’t won the title, he would’ve come back,” Boeheim writes, according to multiple reports. “I honestly don’t know, and I don’t think Carmelo knows. Carmelo did his work, went to class and never gave us any trouble. He made four C’s and a D in his first semester, and if anyone wants to roll his eyes at that, plenty of freshmen who aren’t carrying a basketball team on their back do a lot worse.”"

It certainly doesn’t seem as if Boeheim’s intention here was to embarrass Melo — he actually appears to be praising him — but Anthony likely isn’t too thrilled this information is known.

Regardless of how Anthony performed in the classroom, he’s carved out a pretty nice life for himself. Anthony has emerged as one of the best players in the NBA and signed a five-year, $124 million contract with the New York Knicks this offseason.
