Rajon Rondo has been the subject of trade rumors for years with the Boston Celtics, but the new TV deal the NBA struck may mean he sticks around after all.

Boston Celtics fans have been fretting over losing Rajon Rondo this season, as his contract expires at the end of the year and NBA teams are already circling the tank to get after him once he hits the market. But the Celtics star may not end up hitting the market after all, as the new television deal the league struck could help Boston bring the guard back for another set of years.

The projected salary cap could reach as high as $80 million thanks to the new deal and there is talk of abolishing max contracts from the NBA entirely. The latter may not totally effect or even help the Celtics in their pursuit of bringing back Rondo, but the increased cap figure certainly does.

According to Brian Robb of Boston.com, the new TV deal for the NBA may end up helping the Boston Celtics retain Rajon Rondo and come to terms on a new contract with him.

"The new deal will also likely impact Boston’s negotiations with Rajon Rondo this offseason. At first glance, a five-year $100+ million max-type deal might seem like an overpayment, but a looming $80 million salary cap makes a $20+ million year salary look a bit more reasonable. If the Celtics aren’t willing to give Rondo that kind of money this summer, the chances have increased that some other team may want to take that risk."

This is great news for fans and it’s great for the growth of the Celtics. It would serve as an example of the new TV deal helping a team not stockpile free agent talent but be able to keep their own talent in-house and not have to sacrifice as much as they once thought they might have to. Rondo is key for the Celtics and bringing him back will be something the Celtics relish  if they can make it happen.
