Hockey has always been one of the more physical sports- but sometimes, players take it a step too far.

During a matchup between the Adirondack Flames and the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, former NHL-er Trevor Gillies became one of those players. He was recorded bashing another player’s head into the ice- intentionally, nonetheless- during a fight between the two at the start of the season.

The fight wasn’t even necessarily an even one, as rookie William Carrier had yet to drop his stick… or his gloves.

Carrier seems relatively unhurt by the incident, as his visor seemed to have absorbed the majority of the impact. Whether he player was severely injured or not, though, is beside the point- the manner in which Gillies conducted himself was shameful.

Gillies apologized for the incident afterward, expressing his regret for “shaming the family name”. It seems a little late for that, though- the 35-year-old veteran had no excuse for reacting the way he did in the game.

The Americans’ head coach, Chadd Cassidy, suggested that he didn’t want to be a part of hockey if there was room in the game for that kind of thing. He moved for the league to penalize Gillies severely- and penalize him they did. He will be serving a thirteen-game suspension, as he had already received the first game suspension in the final five minutes of the matchup.
