On Friday, the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons

pulled off a trade to send center Joel Anthony to the Pistons and guard Will Bynum to the Celtics

.

It seemed a little strange for both sides seeing as Will Bynum got a contract extension from the Pistons after his initial deal expired but under Stan Van Gundy’s new regime, he’s cleaning house. Although Will Bynum has shown the ability to make plays in the past, it seemed strange for a Celtics team that drafted Marcus Smart, re-signed Avery Bradley and signed Evan Turner, to deal for him.

Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe made sense of the deal, reporting the Celtics plan to waive Will Bynum.

"Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and guard Will Bynum are expected to meet on Saturday, according to two NBA sources, and the team is likely to waive Bynum, who was acquired Friday from the Detroit Pistons.Bynum, 31, is in Boston and will take his physical before he and his representatives meet with Ainge. NBA sources said the Celtics are content with their point guard lineup of Rajon Rondo, Marcus Smart, and Phil Pressey, leaving Bynum out of the equation."

Instead, the deal was simply about dumping Joel Anthony and avoiding the luxury tax by acquiring Will Bynum. Will Bynum has talent and could find a role somewhere as a backup guard. Plenty of teams will likely have interest in claiming Will Bynum off of waivers or signing him outright should he clear waivers.

Will Bynum averaged 8.7 points, 3.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game last season while shooting 42.8% from the field, 32.3% from beyond the arc and 80.2% from the free throw line last season.
