Robert Griffin III has been out since injuring his ankle in week two of the 2014 NFL season. He may be close to a return however.

The Washington Redskins squeaked by the Tennessee Titans on a last second field goal on Sunday. Kirk Cousin started the game for the Redskins but was promptly pulled to start the second half after looking all sorts of terrible in the early going. Colt McCoy ended up playing savior, but it may be Robert Griffin III that’s back under center this week.

After suffering a significant ankle injury earlier this season, RG3 has spent the past few weeks on the shelf for the Redskins. Initial thoughts were that Cousins, viewed as a strong backup, could handle the team and maybe even take over the starting gig.

Early returns were promising, but Cousins just couldn’t get the job done as he has thrown nine interceptions and only 10 touchdowns in six games this season.

Adam Schefter is reporting that it will be McCoy taking first team reps this week in practice, but that RG3 can’t be ruled out with the Dallas Cowboys not looming until Monday Night Football.

McCoy stepped in admirably on Sunday, completing 91.7% of his passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. To be fair, his first pass was a short completion that Pierre Garcon turned up field and took 70 yards to the end zone.

Many Redskins fans wanted Robert Griffin III out as quarterback upon his return as he failed to get the team into the end zone in a week one matchup with the Texans. However, as this point in time the dual threat quarterback looks like Washington’s best bet to getting them to stay competitive throughout the rest of the season.

Against Dallas, Washington will need all of the offensive help they can muster, but it still doesn’t make sense to rush Griffin back. His status will likely be updated throughout the week.
