Oakland Raiders defensive end LaMarr Woodley suffered a torn bicep in Sunday’s loss against the Arizona Cardinals and could be done for the season, according to Ian Rapoport.
Raiders coach Tony Sparano indicated earlier that the injury was “serious” but wasn’t clear on the extent, according to Fallon Smith of CSN Bay Area.
It’s not as if Woodley has been particularly effective, recording just five tackles this season and no sacks. As a team, the Raiders have record an NFL second-worst six sacks all season. That’s especially disappointing considering they invested in veteran guys like Woodley and Justin Tuck in free agency.
Overall, though, the Raiders rank 11th in the NFL in total defense while the offense ranks at the bottom of the league. It’s not as if this was a team looking forward to the playoff race, so getting the younger guys some reps in Woodley’s absence could be the silver (and black?) lining.
Woodley, 29, signed a two-year contract this off-season after spending his first six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Benson Mayowa is listed as his backup at defensive end. The team also has CJ Wilson as a reserve pass rusher. With Khalil Mack on the roster, the job of the defensive end should be to busy the offensive tackle and free up Mack. Overall, don’t expect a major drop off or much more production with Woodley out.
