Penguins’ GM Says Fleury Is His Goalie
Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford wants to keep Marc-Andre Fleury around
As an Phoenix Arizona Coyotes fan, I like having Marc-Andre Fleury in the league, because he keeps Mike Smith company in the ‘inconsistent basket-case’ club. As a Pittsburgh fan, though, I wouldn’t necessarily be thrilled to hear that the Penguins netminder could be returning- and staying for a while.

Fleury has struggled with consistency since the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009, contributing strongly to the team’s ultimate demise during the Stanley Cup playoffs this past spring. He has his moments of brilliance, but onlookers can almost see the moment he gets thrown off his game- and it’s usually all downhill from there.
Fleury is one of a number of goaltenders who will hit the free agency market this summer, although none of them are necessarily a step up. That would proooobably be because if you’ve got a good goalie, you hold on to him like he’s your last dollar.
According to NBC Pro Hockey Talk, though, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford has no issues with the netminder. He has insisted that he will seek to re-sign the pending UFA before free agency hits this summer, stating that “so long as [Rutherford] is GM, Fluery is his goalie”.
That seems like a very good way to ensure you’re not GM for much longer.
