St. Louis Rams quarterback Austin Davis has been impressive for a third stringer this year, but he may not deserve the extremely high praise he’s getting around the NFL.

Brett Favre told ESPN’s Ed Werder Wednesday, “Not to sound off my rocker, but [Austin Davis] — in my mind — can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner. [Brian] Hoyer as well.” This is VERY high praise coming from future hall of fame former quarterback Favre to a guy that maybe doesn’t quite deserve it just yet.

Both Favre and Austin Davis both went to Southern Mississippi, hence the extra generous praise.

Austin Davis undoubtedly has exceeded expectations that were not pre-set to too high of standards for the St. Louis Rams, but nonetheless he’s exceeded them. The 25-year-old quarterback came into the mix after Sam Bradford got injured again before the start of the 2014 season, then Shaun Hill got injured in the first game of the year, bringing in Davis, who continues to play despite the fact that Hill is healthy again.

In five and a half games, Davis has 135 completions for 205 attempts, 1,520 yards, nine touchdowns with four interceptions, three fumbles and a 94.4 passer rating as well as just two wins. Granted their second win came against the Seattle Seahawks but 2-4 is 2-4, it doesn’t exactly look good.

If you’re going to become a great quarterback you have to win games. Austin Davis in the Rams kept it close against the now 6-1 Dallas Cowboys which is admirable and obviously got the big win over Seattle last Sunday. At 2-4, I’m not that impressed. His 94.4 passer rating is admirable and he’s great when he throws the long ball (51.7 completion percentage on balls 20 yards or more) but there’s plenty of work to be done.

To say Austin Davis is a future Kurt Warner or Tom Brady, come on Brett, you knows that’s a little much. There’s plenty of room for Davis to immensely slip up, but also room for him to shine. The Rams have a very tough stretch of games ahead of them with the Chiefs, 49ers, Cardinals, Broncos and Chargers. If Davis can win three or four of those games, he might be able to deserve a little more praise, but let’s not take things out of hand.
