Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said the only thing elite about current Bears QB Jay Cutler is his salary.

Chicago Bears GM Phil Emery recently called Jay Cutler an elite quarterback and former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher agreed, to a small extent. He’ll concede that Cutler is elite on paper, specifically the green paper being doled in Cutler’s direction. But beyond that? No thanks.

“Financially, he is one of the elite guys in the NFL … he just hasn’t produced like an elite quarterback,” Urlacher said on 87.7 FM The Game, per the Chicago Sun-Times. He cited the top tier of Super Bowl winning quarterbacks to support his stance.

"“You look at the Bradys, the Mannings, the Rodgers, the Brees, those guys win every year, even with no one around them. Rodgers has no offensive line. He wins. Brady has no receivers. He wins.”“And you look at Jay. He’s got Brandon (Marshall), Alshon (Jeffery), Matt (Forte), this great offensive line, Martellus Bennett, and they can’t seem to put it together, for some reason. I’m not sure if that’s his fault, but for some reason they just can’t figure it out.”"

While Cutler hasn’t had elite production throughout his career, it’s hard to deny he’s doing pretty well this season. He’s tallied 1,866 yards with 14 passing TDs and 7 interceptions, but the Bears have sputtered to a 3-4 start on the season. Much like in years past, the Bears seem like a pretty talented squad being held back by a few mistakes here and there, some of which have been timely Cutler picks.

This could be more perception than reality at this point, but however you want to look at it, Jay Cutler will always have a great deal of scrutiny following his every move unless he and this Bears team can get over the hump and find some real playoff success in the crowded NFC.
