Oregon coach says Mariota is much more than a product of some college football system

Want to start a polarizing debate among NFL scouts? Bring up Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. There are many that think he is nothing more than a product of Oregon’s system. There are those that think that the system actually hurts him, and he will do better in a pro offense. One thing is for certain. Very few scouts agree on Mariota.

No matter what your position on Mariota is, you can’t deny that he makes good decisions. He has started since his freshman year in Eugene, and he has thrown just ten interceptions in 910 career pass attempts. That’s it. He has not thrown a single interception this season in 188 attempts! Ten interceptions is a month for some quarterbacks!

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich is adamant that Mariota is not just a product of the system. He has this to say in an interview with College Football 24/7: “Marcus can run any system and any offense on any level. He is a system guy. Everybody is a system guy.”

Helfich went on to say: “Our system has elements of a bunch, whether it’s the West Coast offense, run-and-shoot, triple option, and our pro-style passing game. He can do all that stuff. So much of that is the ability to make great decisions, in rhythm, on time and be accurate with the ball and be tough. He’s all those things.”

On his career after Eugene, Helfrich stated: “He’s a competitive perfectionist. Every single thing he does, he wants to do great. To him (the combine) is right in his wheelhouse, and he’ll do great.”

Not every NFL scout feels that way. I guess we will all find out come April when the Combine steals center stage in the sports universe!
