Although they returned to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2014, things have been going downhill for the Indiana Pacers for some time.
The Indiana Pacers entered the season with the goal of home court advantage in the east. They were able to achieve that goal but really struggled down the stretch. After surviving playoff encounters with the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards, they were defeated by the Miami Heat in six games.
In the summer, they lost guard Lance Stephenson to the Charlotte Hornets. Stephenson reportedly wanted to stay in Indiana but didn’t like the deal he was initially presented with. Then, things got even worse. During Team USA practice in Las Vegas in preparation of the FIBA World Cup, star forward Paul George was injured when he came down on his leg and suffered a compound fracture of tibia and fibula.
That’s led many to believe the Pacers will try to strike a deal to upgrade their roster.
However, NBA scribe Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders doesn’t believe the Indiana Pacers will make a big move but rather believes they will be “mediocre” and have a “huge drop off.”
“I think they’ll be mediocre this year,” writes Kennedy. “I’m not sure that Rondo would really help them all that much this year anyway, since scoring the ball will likely be their biggest problem. It’s very possible that Rodney Stuckey or George Hill leads this team in scoring, which is frightening. I’m sorry to say this to you, but I’m predicting a huge drop off for Indiana and I expect them to fall out of the playoffs.”
The best course of action may simply be to try to deal the likes of center Roy Hibbert and power forward Davis West, land in the lottery and pair George with that pick in order to prepare for the future.
