Although his contract will come off of the books in 2015 once the NBA season comes to an end, the New York Knicks would consider dealing Amare Stoudemire right now

Now that star forward Carmelo Anthony is locked up for the next five years, the New York Knicks are clearly thinking about the future and what kind of stars they can acquire in the future.

Memphis Grizzlies‘ center Marc Gasol probably tops their list and there is no doubt they have their eye on Boston Celtics‘ point guard Rajon Rondo and Detroit Pistons‘ big man Greg Monroe.

However, they will likely have to wait through another tough season that could see them sneak into the postseason but that’s about as far as they could get it. That is unless they can pull off a trade and potentially get something in return for the expiring contract of big man Amare Stoudemire.

“They’d consider trading Amare right now if they could find a taker,” writes Chuck Myron of Basketball Insiders. “The disadvantage to trading a guy with a max salary during the season is that fewer teams have the cap space necessary to take him on if it’s chiefly a salary-clearing move, as an Amare trade would most likely represent. Plus, if you’re making a major trade that changes the fundamental core of your team, you want to do it in the offseason, ideally, so that you can have a full training camp together with your new group.”

There have been rumors the Philadelphia 76ers could be a taker but the most realistic scenario has Amare Stoudemire playing out his current contract.

Amare Stoudemire averaged just 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 55.7% from the field and 73.9% from the free throw line last season. In his career, Amare Stoudemire has averaged 20.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 blocks in 33.0 minutes per game while shooting 53.5% from the field and 76.2% from the charity stripe.
