Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo participated in his first full contact practice without incident and could play in the team’s regular season opener.

Rajon Rondo could return to the Boston Celtics starting lineup sooner than expected. He made it through his first full contact practice on Friday, which could put him in line to start or at least appear in the team’s season opener at home against the Brooklyn Nets, per Gary Washburn at the Boston Globe.

Rondo hopes to move on from two straight injury-plagued seasons that saw him appear in less than half of the team’s regular season games. The Celtics floundered in Rondo’s absence, finishing the 2013-14 season with a 25-57 record. In just 30 games played last season, Rondo averaged 11.7 points and 9.8 assists, neither of which were career highs, but weren’t too far out of line with his career production, giving the team hope for improvement this season if Rondo can stay healthy.

Rumors always dog Rondo and if the Celtics do remain in the Eastern Conference basement while the enigmatic point guard does his thing, he will be a prime trade target for a team in need of a proven point guard whose play when healthy could sway a team’s playoff fortunes.

For now, the Celtics just have to worry about beating the Nets , who might be as bad as they are this season, after watching Paul Pierce defect to the Washington Wizards. If Rondo’s healthy and playing, that much should be within reach.
