The Utah Jazz announced it exercised the team options of second-year players Trey Burke and Rudy Gobert to extend their contracts through the 2015-16 season.

For those NBA teams not in a large market, one of the vogue strategies in the NBA is to collect young assets in hopes of (1) one or two of those guys turns into a super star–see the Oklahoma City Thunder–or (2) you can package enough of them together in order to acquire a super star via trade–such as the Houston Rockets.

The Utah Jazz are in the middle of collecting assets, and we are not sure which route they will go in just yet. Gordon Hayward could be a star, but he seemingly regressed last season (although I thought that was more a matter of him being in a bad situation). Trey Burke is promising and Rudy Gobert showed off in the FIBA World Cup. Both of them are very intriguing pieces, and the Jazz did well to utilize the their team options and extend their contracts through the 2015-16 season.

Both Burke and Gobert were selected in the first round of the 2013 draft. The Jazz have loaded up on backcourt players the past few seasons, adding Burke to a group with Alec Burks and rookie Dante Exum and Rodney Hood. Meanwhile, Gobert is in the power rotation with Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors. He should see plenty of minutes as the first big off the bench.

The Jazz have a ton of young assets. Of them, Burke has the potential to be an All-Star. Gobert could also be a disruptive force on defense, but it will be interesting to see how he fits in to Quin Snyder’s horns system–which will put him further away from the basket on offense.

Having them both locked up for another season was a no-brainer, and will help the Jazz see what they have or give them another year to trade them.
