Who are the three stars of the third week of NHL action?

The third week of the NHL season was anything but ordinary – there were several outstanding performances, making this week’s three stars post very difficult. However, we also had the tragedy in Ottawa reminding us that there is a scary and sad world outside of sports. As is often the case, sports helped comfort a grieving city and nation as we saw in the wonderful ceremony last night in Ottawa and the other arenas in Canada.

This is the third edition of the Three Stars of the Week and we will recognize three players who had outstanding performances during the NHL’s third week of regular season action. Check back every Sunday for a new list of three stars for the previous week’s play.

No. 1 Star: Jonathan Quick

On Thursday night Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in a 2-0 shutout of the Buffalo Sabres. The shutout was Quick’s 33rd of his career, passing Rogie Vachon for the all-time shutout record for the Kings. It was also Quick’s second shutout in the last three games, the first being a spectacular 43 save effort against the St. Louis Blues back on October 16th. He followed that night up by allowing just a single goal on 41 shots against the Minnesota Wild last Sunday. Quick has a 1.54 Goals Against Average and a .958 Save% in his six appearances so far this season, making him an early candidate for the Vezina Trophy.

No. 2 Star: Corey Perry

Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks netted his second hat trick of the season (the first coming in the Ducks season opener loss to the Colorado Avalanche) in a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Perry completed the hat trick with 1:25 on the clock when he scored on an empty netter. He then followed up the performance against Buffalo with a goal and an assist in the Ducks’ 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Perry currently leads the NHL for goals with nine and is off to the best start of his career in terms of goal scoring.. Perry has line-mate Ryan Getzlaf to thank for his offensive output, as Getzlaf’s ability to create offense and pass the puck has led to several scoring opportunities.

No. 3 Star: James Neal

I’m sure James Neal would have liked things to have gone a little better in his first game against his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Neal and the Nashville Predators were shutout last night 3-0, their first lost in regulation this season. However, after a slow start Neal has been outstanding for the Predators. On Thursday night, Neal scored all three of Nashville’s goals in a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. The Predators held a 2-1 lead going into the third period, when Neal scored off a rebound to make it 3-1. Chicago scored with a little under eight minutes to play, but the Predators were able to hold on for the win. Neal also scored a goal two nights prior against the Arizona Coyotes.
